Our beloved friend Sister Joan Chatfield passed away on Friday 3/1/19 after a fall in her home the evening before when she suffered a severe head injury. She was 86 years old and a Maryknoll nun.
Sister Joan passed peacefully with little pain and suffering, indeed a blessing. Sister Joan was a Maryknoll nun for over 68 years, her last 62 years in Hawaii. She did so much for the community, always promoting love, peace and equality, always respecting one’s path whether religious, spiritual, or not. She was an especially strong women’s advocate. In 2009 Honpa Hongwanji Mission honored Sister Joan as one of the “Living Treasures of Hawaii.”
Besides being on the Mindful Hawaii Inter Spirituality Committee, Joan was a member of many organizations including, but not limited to The Interfaith Alliance, All Believers Network, and the John 17:21 Ministry. She also served as the Executive Director of the Institute for Religion and Social Change and the Vice President of the Mits Aoki Legacy Foundation. In addition, Sister Joan taught in local Catholic schools for 36 years and served as Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at Chaminade University.
Services will be held March 21 at Sacred Heart Church, 1701 Wilder Ave. Viewing is 9-10 AM, Mass 10:30 AM, reception 11:30 -1:30 PM (where there will be an opportunity for sharing. Burial is 2 PM at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
We will miss her dearly.
