OUR MAY MINDFUL HAWAII MEETING

MINDFUL HAWAII MANY TRUTHS, MANY PATHS, ONE SOURCE

ALOHA ALL!!

OUR NEXT MINDFUL HAWAII COMMUNITY MEETING WILL BE AT 1 PM SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2019 AT KAITO GAKKO, 3225 PAKANU ST, NEXT TO THE MANOA CHINESE CEMETERY.

We will have an interesting and informative presentation by Akihiko Masuda, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His talk is entitled “Making Sense of Mindfulness in Behavioral Healthcare: A Contextual Behavioral Science Perspective.”  His primary  aim will be to show how the teaching and practice of mindfulness guides the promotion of behavioral health in recent years in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.

Dr. Masuda will start his presentation with a brief story of himself and why he pursued a career in mindfulness as a clinician scientist and practitioner.  He will then present mindfulness as a current major movement in the field of behavioral health (e.g., wellness promotion intervention), and how mindfulness is understood both as a skill that a person cultivates and as a method that cultivate that skill.  He will also present some notable mindfulness-informed treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT), as well as notable assessment methods (self reported measures) in research and practice. He will conclude by presenting finding of  a preliminary treatment outcome study that he and his research team at UH Manoa recently completed.

In my view, in a post materialism age, the line between materiel science and religion is becoming thinner and more pliable.  Today we find that spiritual and wisdom practices such as meditation found in many spiritual traditions are finding its way into scientific fields such as psychology. In this evolving process it’s important for us to know and understand this evolving trend that there are complementary and integrative qualities between science and spirituality. Knowing this helps to harmonize two fields of knowing and practice that were at one time distinct and unrelated. Unifying knowledge and spirituality importantly leads in the direction of harmonizing human consciousness.

Don’t miss this important presentation by DR. MASUDA. Mark your calendars for this can’t miss event.

JIMMY
